Inflationary pressures and an energy emergency are affecting Europe due to Brussels sanctions in response to the Russian-Ukrainian war. Instead of promoting peace, mitigating, or lifting retaliation, the left is calling for sanctions to be increased and extended, which would further increase the rate of price increase in European countries and put the security of energy supply at ever greater risk. Századvég examined what representatives of the Hungarian left think about the sanctions policy.

The failed sanction policy has put Europe in a difficult situation, and the countries of our continent have to face an energy crisis in addition to wartime inflation. Brussels’ latest draft, which it intends to adopt at the extraordinary Energy Council to be held on 26 July, would further worsen the situation of EU citizens, and it would mean an open intervention in the lives of individuals and an unprecedented restriction on national sovereignty at the EU level. After imposing counterproductive sanctions, the European Commission would now go against its own primary sources of law, the founding treaties, which define subsidiarity as a basic principle and the order of EU legislation – these would be disregarded by Brussels.

We are living in an age of crises. We have controlled the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, but it is still present, and war has been raging on the eastern border of the European Union for more than four months. The citizens of the continent are facing an unprecedented raw material and energy crisis that requires pragmatic, prompt and firm decisions by politicians. However, regarding real problems, Brussels is still unwilling to give up the ideological warfare against conservative-led countries that reject the ideals of open societies.
