Based on the research, it can be stated that
Preferences for prime minister: Viktor Orbán 62 percent, Péter Márki-Zay 32 percent
Nearly twice as many people would like to see Viktor Orbán as head of government than Péter Márki-Zay, according to a poll conducted by Századvég. The survey revealed the preferences for prime minister among politically active Hungarians, including the breakdown by types of settlement, age, and political self-classification.
There is less support for the left’s candidate for prime minister
62 percent of Hungarians would prefer the incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to govern the country in the next term,
while only 32 percent would support the election of Péter Márki-Zay as head of government. Interestingly, in October 2021, 41 percent of respondents would have preferred the mayor of Hódmezővásárhely to be the prime minister, that is, Márki-Zay’s camp has decreased by 9 percent points in recent months.
Viktor Orbán is more popular than Péter Márki-Zay in the capital as well
Examining the preferences for prime minister by place of residence, it can be stated that the candidate for prime minister of the left-wing forces, in addition to rural voters, can no longer reach the majority of the voters in the capital. The survey shows that
52 percent of residents in Budapest would support the re-election of the incumbent prime minister,
while 43 percent would like to see Péter Márki-Zay govern the country. In addition, 58 percent of those living in county seats and 68 and 66 percent of respondents living in towns and villages, respectively, would support Viktor Orbán against his left-wing opponent.
One in ten undecided voters would support the candidate for prime minister of the left-liberal forces
Examining the age groups of the issue, it is important to emphasise that the incumbent prime minister is more popular among the youngest electorate than Péter Márki-Zay:
48 percent of 18-29-year-old voters would prefer Viktor Orbán and 41 percent would prefer the mayor of Hódmezővásárhely to be the head of government in the next term.
Péter Márki-Zay cannot expect significant support among the politically undecided people either. The poll reveals that
43 percent of undecided voters would like Viktor Orbán and 10 percent would like Márki-Zay to be the head of government in the next four years.
Forty-five percent of respondents who politically belong to the centre would support the incumbent prime minister, while 44 percent would support his left-liberal opponent.
